Surprised by Police

At the end of winter, I am surprised by the report Secret Senta Deputies reported by CBS News online. The story is telling the deputies in Missouri, giving $100 cash to the people on the street without any reason, just for charity. This report challenges my perception of the value of police and public services, and I still reflect on the importance of public service until now.

Here are five things that make me reflect after watching the reports. Those are my perspectives, and I love to share them with you.

1. Value Contrasting

Before I watch the report, my perception toward policies is the group that has a strict, served face. They are the group of people you hate most if you are received okay by them; they are the group of people you fear most when you read the description about them in “1984” or watched documentary about Gestapo; they are the group of people you account most when a disaster or riot emerge in society. It is hard for people to connect them to Senta Claus, but deputies in Missouri were playing this role. The contradiction between my original perception and story surprises me a lot.

2.Reality of Reaction

The majority of the people who receive the money are drivers. When they were pulled over by the police, they felt frustrated and disappointed at first, because people thought police might need to be punished or fined. However, when police give people money, they smile and hug them because of surprise, or they actually need money.

3.Attitude Persuading

The most valuable transition, after I watched this report, is the attitude toward police. I used to regard the police as a representation of public power, the value of service and strict personality. Hence I would feel intimidated when I saw them on the streets or watched reports about them. The report from CBS represents their kind personality and part of humanity, and this changed my attitude about the police. Now I would regard policies as a member of the human being, just like ordinary people. I would attribute the change of attitude toward the presentation of humanity to the police.

4.Humanity First

Police represent humanity would be a rare phenomenon among reports in the world. Most of the time, the audience who read reports about police would feel the theme of “duty first.” In this case, the theme of the report, about police, is “humanity first.” This is an innovation in reporting. It is true for the audience to feel interested when they read articles that can reflect humanity instead of value who are far away from us.

5.Value of Helping

The reason for the police to give money to people is to aim for helping. From the perspective of the police, they are helping people to feel joy, especially at Christmas, by giving them money. From the perspective of people, they actually need money to achieve the things they need to do. This action represents the value of helping.
